After R.E. Lee

Lee's "Bad Old Man" drove Hunters Army from the valley, made the last Northern Invasion and came a knocking on Lincoln's back door
in 1864.
John Breckinridge in command of "Department of East Tennesse and Western Virginia" defeated Sigel's army at New Market.

Jackson, Stuart, A.S. Johnston, Longstreet, Forrest, Hampton
Ewell wasn't as bad as some people think. Nor was Early. A P Hill was a great fighter and did well, just not a good Corp commander. Same goes with Hood, great brigade and division and Corp leader.
Hardee... I question some of his stuff but was reliable.
The individual leaders I thought did good were Morgan and Mosby.

General Alexander Stewart had a mostly respectable career in the western AOT, but doesn't seem to get much attention.

May as well throw Kirby Smith's name out there and watch the reaction.
As a major Department commander the question of Kirby Smith is one of did he or didn't he perform well as a senior general.
I suppose he did. And his record before going West suggests he could command a field army well.
