John Magruder reports an affair with Zapatista bandits near Mier, sept. 2nd 1863.

"In late August 1863, Mexican troops were ambushed and routed by Zapata on the road between Guerrero and Mier. In response, Benavides, now a major in the Confederate army, rode downriver to Rancho Clareño, crossed into Mexico, and followed the trail of Zapata and his men in the direction of Mier. Early on the morning of September 2, scouts located Zapata's camp in a mesquite thicket. In the furious attack that followed, Zapata and several of his men were killed" ---from the book, Cortina

Im curious if there's any other ACW action with the mexicans other than the Cortina wars

"Shelby's Expedition to Mexico: An Unwritten Leaf of the War" Is a really good read, technically just after the ACW but it's interesting nonetheless and I highly recommend if you find the ACW and Mexican conflicts interesting. I do have another book that made mention of confederates and Mexicans exchanging fire, but I'll have to get back to you on that after I go through my notes.

The other book is "Kirby Smiths Confederacy". He claims that around August 31st confederate pickets and the Juarista's exchanged fire. Ill add context when needed but the book goes on to say on page 370 "On September 3, Cortina (General of the Juarista Republicans) interdicted trade between Tamaulipas and Texas. by the 4th, rumors were afloat that Cortina and Col. H. M. Day, commanding the union forces at Brazos Santiago, had agreed to mount a joint attack against Brownsville.. And by the 5th, batteries of Juarista artillery had been planted on the Mexican shore of the Rio Grande, with the guns black muzzles pointing towards Texas. Cortina "hates Americans, especially Texans" reported (general) Ford...."

"... On September 6th. Under cover of a heavy rainfall, a body of Juarista infantry and a battery opened fire on Colonel Showalter's 4th Arizona cavalry which was on picket at Palmito Ranch...." He (Showalter) "lost control of his regiment and the 4th Arizona broke and retreared to Brownsville...." He reported that "a strong federal column from Brazos Santiago had been seen closing on Fort Brown from the east"

This is all I have time to quote for now, but I do recommend this book as well, as you can see it has a lot of information on the Trans-Mississippi as a whole including the stuff happening at the border of it. I have 2 pages of notes on this book I took while reading it

That major that was mentioned was probably Cristobal's brother Santos. I recommend the book "Tejano Tiger" by Jerry Thompson or was it Norman Dasinger?
