Advice on Novel

I've been contemplating writing a historical fiction based on the civil war particularly the stonewall brigade. I know there are several people on here that have written and published books so i'm hoping i can get some advice from everyone. I'm all ears
 
basically anything. I'm thinking about writing about a young boy who joins the stonewall brigade shortly before 2nd manassas.
