I know my great-great-grandfather Asa (W. ?) Saddler (1847-1917) enlisted in a Federal Infantry Regiment during the war (probably from Ohio and probably later in the war) and that his commanding officer (later his father-in-law) was Captain Abner L. Matteson. I have yet to identify exactly which regiment he fought with and I am asking where I might start looking to verify his regiment and service record. Below is a transcribed letter that he wrote to the U.S. Dept of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions requesting a Veteran pension. The wheels of Government turn slowly (as they still do today) and this is just one of several pieces of correspondence he apparently wrote trying to obtain his pension. Note: I have made no effort to correct his spelling or grammar.

To the Beaure of Pencins. you will pleas excuse pencil for I have no ink for pen The reason that I have not replied before is I wrote some letters to some of my relations & friends for to find some record of my birth but all of my relatives that would be most fit to no my birth is dead & I cant find any record. I have a letter from a school mate that is the only reply that I have got that is any good we wer boath thes ame age & wer brought up in the same neighbor hood & went to the same school for 8 or 9 years I will send his letter with this I have no brothers or sisters alive I have two half brothers & one half sister, they are all dead they wer younger than I They lived & died in yorkestate so if thare was any record of my birth I no nothing of it nor cant get any trace of it. Now for some reason you have made a mistake in my age. According to your letter you have got my birth aug 7 1846 instead of 1847. I might have made a mistake in some of my letter if I have it is my mistake in stead of yours. My right birth is aug 7 1847 My father died when I was two weaks old Lived with my mother till she got maried again then lived with my grandfather till I was 16 in my 17 year inlisted & went in to the army when I was 17 in my 18 year I was 17 the 7 day of august & inlisted the 27 day of august was in the army two years lacking 18 days. Lived in yorkestate and Ohio 11 years & have lived in Michigan 38 years I have a family record of my one family that was established in 1867 when I was maried. My Birth is recorded 1847 I dont no that thare is any thing more that I could ad at prsant Hopingthat this will be satisfactory.

Yours respectivly

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about him? Thanks.

This is the only Asa Saddler I see:

Saddler , Asa M.
BATTLE UNIT NAME: 1st Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry
SIDE: Union
COMPANY: G
SOLDIER'S RANK IN: Private
SOLDIER'S RANK OUT: Sergeant
ALTERNATE NAME: Asa M./Sadler
FILM NUMBER: M386 ROLL 24
PLAQUE NUMBER:
NOTES: General Note - Original filed under Asa M./Sadler
Matteson was in Ohio regiments; there is also a record of Asa Saddler in Michigan receiving a pension (and his wife Lydia, with a widow's pension from 1916), but that shows service in new York cavalry regiments.

Andy, thanks! The name may be spelled Sadler vs. Saddler. He was born in Ohio and died in Michigan in 1917. His wife was Lydia Ann Matteson. All along I was thinking he fought in an Ohio regiment but perhaps he could have enlisted in Kentucky or even a NY regiment?
