Abraham Kurkindolle Allison

On a recent thread about David Yulee the name of Governor Abraham Allison was mentioned.I must admit not much is known about him (by me anyway). He had just assumed office in the last month of the war following the death of Florida's Governor John Milton on April 1, 1865. He was captured on June 29, 1865 and imprisoned at Fort Pulaski for several months. He was one of the ex Confederate Personalities held in various prisons following the war.A little bit of input may help others learn about this "lesser" known Civil War Personality.

He only had that title of Florida's Governor from April 1, 1865 to May 19, 1865. He resigned and went into hiding. He did manage to evade Yankee troops for exactly 1 month before being captured.

Allison was president of the Florida Senate when Gov. John Milton was found dead from a gunshot to the head on April 1, 1865. The death of Milton has been called both an accident and a suicide. Just before he was found dead, he addressed the state legislation. Part of that address had this quote..."Northern leaders have developed a character so odious that death would be preferable to reunion with them."
