Good morning AoT pros!

After Stones River what is the story behind incident and charges/counter charges btw Buford and Col Butler that ultimately caused Buford's relief?

Bragg was angry with Buford at insubordination within his brigade, as per @danny's notes in General Buford's biography thread. Buford's command consisted primarily of Kentucky regiments raised under beloved Kentuckian John Hunt Morgan, and his regimental commanders wanted a transfer to Morgan's command. Buford didn't do enough to control them, and Bragg blamed Buford (and, indirectly, Davis for assigning Buford without Bragg's consent).

@danny this is great work. Can you give me the source?

Thank you Danny. As wild as this Buford story it gets even wilder when he reported to Pemberton in Jackson.
Just wish I could be more specific. My life long Confederate Military research was [for much of that time] devoted to information for my own personal use, and sadly until more recently, was done without sufficient attention devoted to recording the multitude of sources.

I had never planned on writing any books or such. But I have always been thrilled to offer what I can.

That said, of late I have labored to add citations wherever possible.

This early Buford study was captured from the many volumes and chapters that the Nat'l Archives maintains in DC. I visited there whenever my job took me to the area. I have also hired local DC researchers as recommended by the Archives.

Now, they have undertaken the massive task of digitizing their material. My Buford material utilized that digital format supplemented by the Official Records.

Sorry to relate my haphazard and selfish research habits. I never imagined another person that could benefit from that effort.

Good luck with your research.

No worries Danny, we are all a bunch of little nerds running around doing our little nerd things. I have an entire hard drive full of good information that I didn't properly source either.

Half the battle is knowing where it is to be found. If you don't have it, at least you know where to get it. That's comfort enough for me. And I'm grateful for the work you've done on this!

John
