In 2012, I visited The Confederate Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.

I came across a Civil War ancestry book in their library.

I looked up my last name and found a possible relative.

Most individuals contain a last name spelled.....Beckman, not Bechmann.

A. Bechmann (LA 22nd Infantry - Gomez's Company)

Can anyone research this confederate soldier for me?

Thank you,

Bill

Bill, how did you like Charleston? I am seriously thinking of moving there...

Yeah, not much there.

A. Bechmann enlisted as a Private in Capt F Gomez's Company 22nd Louisiana Infantry
When: Sept 10, 1861
Where: "Camp Lewis near New Orleans"
By whom: "Lt Jno G Devereux La Art CSA"
Period: "until 18 June 1862"

Whats interesting though is the note at the bottom of the carded record:

"This company subsequently became (Old) Company A 23d Regiment Louisiana Infantry, and was disbanded on the evacuation of New Orleans.
The regiment was organized as the 23d Regiment Louisiana Infantry in January 1862. Companies A, B, C, and D having served prior to that date as the Orleans Battalion Louisiana Artillery and other companies as independent organizations."

Theres more and I will post it as an edit. Edit: You can read it above in @AndyHall post

ALSO - There's a whole slew of cards under a man in the same Regiment listed as "Alphs Bachemin" who enlisted Sept 11 1861 at the same location.

There are also cards for "A Bachemin" in Capt Guy Dreux's Louisiana Cavalry Co A (General Johnston's Escort) enlisted March 7 1862 at New Orleans for 90 days but still recorded "present" June 30, 1864 and a record dated July 23, 1862 referring to Special Order 130/2 evidently the request for transfer from Orleans Guard Battery to Capt Dreux's Co Cav.

And an article that summarizes Dreux's Cavalry's service: https://books.google.com/books?id=yEIOAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA21&lpg=PA21&dq=Captain Guy Dreux Louisiana&source=bl&ots=eQnVwMWH8V&sig=DRLvCsT4nlH_o8Opo1iSZIM0ers&hl=en&sa=X&ei=XzcrVd_4I4OUNtWQgLgB&ved=0CB4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Captain Guy Dreux Louisiana&f=false

And a link to his Find A Grave memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=70466722
