Was a peaceful separation of the United States possible? Neither section seemed much interested in comprmise in 1861. Even if the North had allowed the South to depart peacefully would that have resulted in ending the differences? To do so both sides would have had to make an effort to solve any differences and I have doubts either side would have. I hate to be pessimistic but can not see even devising up the territories in a way that satisfied both sides. Plus it appears a few states would have had to be devide an not sure how that could have been accomplished.
