As the weather begins to get cooler, I am reminded of a time when the fireplace in the home was the central point for cooking, keeping warm, and gathering of friends and family. It was a very important part of the house.
Reflecting on this, I wanted to share another one of my relic hunting finds I recovered from the old Price Plantation site - this nice, solid brass, highly decorative fire poker handle. If only it could talk.

Judging from the decoration, it is more than likely an English Victorian period artifact.
The majesty of the decoration on the poker probably reflected the life style of the planter class that often mirrored European culture and mystique.

I read a story about a local family in the area. One of the women in the house had threatened some Union invaders during the civil war with such a fire poker weapon - A "fire poker from hell". I guess they were going to use it as a sword for self defense.

So, I guess these fire pokers had a variety of uses!
