Yes, I realize that the term "Black Confederate" is one that is controversial. As it applies to Atwell Young, it is only part of his story. He was a respected member of the community of free blacks who lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, before and after the Civil War. Atwell was conscripted into the Confederate army in 1864:
