During the summer of 1863 a Federal Cavalry expedition was dispatched into mountainous Confederate territory with 3 objectives to accomplish. The first was to drive off a Confederate cavalry command in the area of operation and destroy their base of operations. The second objective was the destruction of saltpeter works in the area. The third and final object might seem rather unusual a military objective. The Federals achieved their first two objectives, but were defeated in battle by Confederate troops and forced to retreat without accomplishing the third. The Confederates were commanded by a man who's grandson and namesake achieved fame in a later war.
Questions:
1) Who was the Federal commander?
2) What was the 'unusual' third objective?
3) What was the name of the battle?
4) Who was the Confederate commander?
