I'm a cavalryman who during the war, worked for Little Phil,
but after the war, my work was more like that of Buffalo Bill.
The army was so impressed with my courage on the frontier
That after a famous Indian battle, I was breveted to brigadier.
But from Little Phil, it seems, there was no evasion:
He called me to be his right-hand man on more than one occasion.
And while, unlike Buffalo Bill, I never took the stage,
I did write a thrilling book and married a gal half my age.

    Who am I?

I am George Alexander Forsyth. I was a former staff officer for Phil Sheridan and a leader of scouts in Indian Territory. I received a brevet promotion to brigadier general after the battle of Beecher Island against Chief Roman Nose. I also wrote the book Thrilling Days in Army Life.

I'm just going to take a wild guess here and say:

The notorious Marcus Reno who was either a drunk, a coward and a dirty peeping Tom or a completely misunderstood hero.

Sorry the book title should have read "Thrilling Days in Army Life".

This photo taken in 1872 Topeka, KS - our man is sitting on the far right, opposite Custer.
Apparently nervous about sitting next to Gen Sweitzer, who is still visibly upset at him for taking the last piece of chicken at lunch.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I know almost nothing about the post-war U.S. Army and their involvement in the Indian Wars. That being said, the clue about "Buffalo Bill" automatically made me think of Custer since his flamboyant outfits always reminded me of him. My wild guess is George Armstrong Custer.

This little riddle was tough or me. But I believe the guy was George Alexander Forsyth. He wrote Thrilling Days in Army Life.

@KansasFreestater, this was an AWESOME poem!! Well done, my friend, and hats off to you for giving us some wonderful verse to brighten the day!

The subject of this wonderful poem is George Alexander Forsyth (November 7, 1837 - September 12, 1915). While the citation below doesn't include this, he did marry 22 year-old Natalie Sedgewick Beaumont when he was 44, and was the author of Thrilling Days in Army Life (1900).
