I am buried somewhere along the tracks of the Santa Fe RR in a lonely unmarked grave way out West. While on a Scouting patrol, I, and two others in my command, were killed when I failed to follow orders not to engage the enemy. The other two soldiers who were killed are buried at the Presidio in San Francisco. Who am I?

You are Lt. James Barrett of the 1st California Cavalry, killed in action at the Battle of Picacho Pass (or Peak) in Arizona, April 15, 1862.

Two Union enlisted men were also killed. George Johnson and William Leonard were initially buried in Arizona but later their bodies were moved to the National Cemetery at the Presidio. Lt. Barrett's grave is near the railroad tracks but unmarked.

I am Lieutenant James Barrett.

The bodies of the two Union enlisted men killed at Picacho (George Johnson and William S Leonard) were later removed to the National Cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco in San Francisco, California. However, Lieutenant Barrett's grave, near the present railroad tracks, remains undisturbed and unmarked. Union reports claimed that two Confederates were wounded in the fight, but Captain Hunter in his official report mentioned no Confederate casualties other than the three men captured.

Source.

Great read. No prior knowledge of these events.
