Name three confederate officers who, without any prior military experience, rose to the rank of Lt General

Edit - It's very unusual to receive a question from someone who has never participated in the game as a player, but it has now happened twice within the first week of August. But we're always happy to get the questions.

Thanks for your question, Astra23, and welcome to the trivia game. We'd be glad to have more questions any time you want to send any along. And if you ever feel like participating in the game by answering somebody else's question, we'd be happy for that, too.

Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877); Wade Hampton (1818-1902); Richard Taylor (1826-1879).
Although Taylor visited his father, General Zachary Taylor at Matamoros in July 1846 and may have volunteered to become his aide-de-camp, he soon returned home without serving in the military.
(Leonidas Polk (1806-1864) graduated West Point in 1827, but resigned his commission five months later to pursue a religious vocation without further serving in the military.)

Answer: Nathan Bedord Forrest, Wade Hammpton III, and Richard Taylor

Edit - Several players answered with the name of Leonidas Polk. While Polk spent most of his career as an Episcopal clergyman, eventually rising to become a bishop, he graduated from West Point in 1827 and served as a lieutenant for five months before resigning his commission, so he did have some military experience prior to the Civil War.
