Rome sentinel account, Rome, Ga., May 7:

"On Friday they fought at Blountsville, [559] where Colonel Hathaway, of Indiana, was shot in the breast and fell dead from his horse. We are informed by Mr. Joseph G. Blount that when Colonel Hathaway fell, several Yankee officers went to him and fell on his body and wept like children.Colonel Streight asked Mr. B. to put the body of Col. Hathaway in a metallic coffin, and send it through the lines, but was informed that such a coffin could not be procured. He then asked him to put him in a pine coffin and bury him, but Mr. B. replied: "I can't do that, for you have burnt all my lumber."He then asked him to roll up the body in an oil-cloth and bury it"

Streight would later say this about the the loss of Colonel Gilbert Hathaway (73rd IN).... "His loss to me was irreparable. His men almost worshiped him and when he fell, it cast a deep gloom of despondency over his regiment.....We remained in ambush but a short time. I then decided to withdraw as quietly as possible."
