79th Va militaman


Is he a relative of yours? I see he served in the Militia for five months until Oct 1861 but no further service is indicated. Did he have a disability to prevent his continued service or was the unit disbanded after Oct due to the region's Unionist bent?

79th Regiment Virginia Militia (Greenbrier)
Rolls show that five companies of this regiment were in service for one month
and twenty days, having been called out for short periods between June 3
and October 10, 1861. Col. George F. Henry
1st Co. Capt. Silas F. Taylor's Co.
2nd Co. Capt. William Surbaugh's Co.; in service part of the time between
June 25 and October 10, 1861. Also served briefly in 3rd Kanawha Reg't.
3rd Co. Capt. William M. Samples' Co.; in service part of the time between
June 3 and October 10, 1861
4th Co. Capt. Andrew H. McClung's Co.; in service part of the time between
June 25 and October 10, 1861
5th Co. Capt. Edgar Keeny's Co,; in service part of the time between
June 25 and October 10, 1861
