I am not sure, I would like to guess the trivia answer would be the Sand Creek Massacre of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. Women and children accounted for two thirds of the dead. In 1864, the Colorado Milita attacked the Cheyenne & Arapaho.

Edit - Mary Beth, you are probably correct that more people died in the Sand Creek Massacre than in the mass hanging on December 21, 1862, but that was a military attack rather than an execution carried out in accordance with a court sentence.

I believe the largest execution was that of 38 Sioux Indian leaders who led an uprising in Minnesota in December 1862. Believing the US military was distracted and needed to devote its resources to fighting the Civil War, the Sioux engaged in an uprising on the Western frontier. The uprising was however, put down (disgraced General John Pope had been sent there and was general commanding US forces). The number of condemned was actually larger but many were reprieved by President Linclon.

38 Santee Sioux hanged on Dec. 16, 1862, in Mankato, Minnesota, for jumping the reservation and going on the war path against white settlers. Originally 303 were sentenced to hang, but Lincoln commuted the remaining sentences.

Edit - See edits to posts # 3 and 24. The date of the hanging was Dec. 26. Other than that, your answer was correct and you will get credit for it.
