I was born into a Georgia planter family in 1877. From my earliest days I was sympathetic toward the 'Old South'. I studied under William A. Dunning at Columbia University and became a noted historian in my own right. I am best known for a book published in 1918 that showed that the slave economy was inefficient and made major contributions to the 'happy slave' myth. It has been called the work most influential in shaping the view of slavery in America.
Who am I?
What was the name of my book?
