Answer: The professor's name was Ulysses Sherman Grant. His father was Union general Lewis Grant.

Note: The Wikipedia article on Ulysses Sherman Grant states that his mother was the daughter of President Franklin Pierce. This appears to be an error. All the sources I can find about President Pierce indicate that he only had three children, all of whom were sons, and none of them survived until 1867. However, it appears to be on solid ground in stating that Ulysses Sherman Grant's father was General Lewis Grant.
