I was born in 'the Big Apple' and graduated from Yale. I briefly practiced law with my father, who later became a noted jurist. In 1861, I was appointed Major of a newly raised three-year infantry regiment. I received high praise for conspicuous gallantry and leadership in the Battle of Corinth, October 4, 1862. I lost a leg at River's Bridge, South Carolina in February 1864.
I was the last major general of volunteers appointed during the rebellion. I was breveted a Major General in the regular Army in 1867 and served until 1870 when I returned home and established a successful corporate law practice.
