Texas raised seven regiments for state service as "Mounted Volunteers" before their induction into Confederate service:
- 1st Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. Henry E. McCulloch's; later became McCord's Frontier Cavalry.
- 2nd Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. John S. Ford's; later became 2nd Texas Cavalry.
- 3rd Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. William C. Young's; later became 11th Texas Cavalry.
- 4th Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. James Reily's; later became 4th Texas Cavalry.
- 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. Thomas Green's; later became 5th Texas Cavalry.
- 6th Texas Mounted Volunteers: No records found.
- 7th Texas Mounted Volunteers: Col. William Steele's; later became 7th Texas Cavalry.
As seen here, there are no records available for the 6th Texas Mounted Volunteers. By the pattern, it could be the Sixth Texas Cavalry, but that regiment was raised a full two months after the other six. If anybody could identify this unit, or whether it was the 6th TXC, would be greatly appreciated.
