I haven't seen that before. An interesting regiment, in my opinion. Thank you for posting this.

I am very interested in photos of Pennsylvania Regiments. In particular, any where the soldiers are carrying 1841 Mississippi Rifles. If anyone knows of such photos, please post.

How about the 39th NY with the M1841?

I love it. Thanks for the prompt "gift". I will be very happy to receive more.

I had done searches on the Library of Congress for pics of Pennsylvania regiments, but found just a few, and I couldn't spot any 1841 Mississippi. I sort of gave up on the hope of finding such pictures, but you have brought new hope.

Where did you find this? Do you know the date of the picture, or the name of the soldier? It's not a Pennsylvania Regiment, but dated pictures help give a sense of the type of regiments that used the Mississippi (e.g. front line units vs stae militia/homeguard type units).

His name is Alexander Zang of the 39th NY. Taken in 1862 at the earliest because the 39th had much more distinctive uniforms than the rest of the AOP in 1861.

Great Photo. I'm going to say the guy seated next to the guy with the sash is the regimental surgeon as he has a medial officers sword.

I was trying to ID some of the officers here and I think that the officer at the center is Joshua T. Owen but I wouldn't put any money on it. The others I don't have any idea of since they don't look like some of the other senior officers in the regiment.

The negative for this image is in the Library of Congress collection. (03900-03935u) According to the National Park Service Lieutenant Colonel William Davis is seated at the center. Major Patrick Tinen* is seated at left and Surgeon F.F. Burmeister is standing with sash. (*This may be incorrect as Tinen is said to have resigned on January 24, 1865)

Owen seems to have had a pretty turbulent military career. But an interesting fellow nevertheless.
