25th Missouri Infantry. Captain Joseph Schmitz led Company B, Captain Hamilton Dill led Company H, and Captain Simon Evans led Company E. They were joined by an attachment from the 12th Michigan Infantry.
Their mission in the early hours of April 6, 1862, was to determine the number and disposition of rebels sighted earlier. They encountered men of R.H. Brewer's Alabama Cavalry and the Battle of Shiloh began.
