5th Confederate Regiment

S. H. Whitsitts, N. D. Cullen, Co. "G". Men from Memphis. 24 men in this company were enrolled at Vicksburg, Mississippi, June, 1861, having formerly been in Gaines' Company, 22nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment.

I do not see a Gaines' Company in the 22nd Mississippi Regiment. I have a Rowland history of that regiment, which lists names of companies and the list of company commanders and I don't see anyone named Gaines. The only company of the 22nd Regiment from Vicksburg was Company "C"---Sarsfield Southrons.
This also mentions the date of June 1861. Several companies had formed but could not find a regiment to join. Company "G", my ancestor's company, traveled to Iuka, MS, on July 31 to find a regiment. They and another company or two were told to report to Memphis on September 10th where they finally were assigned to the 22nd Mississippi Regiment.

I have been unable to find any info on:

-Colonel Edward Pickett Jr, 21st Tennessee
-Lt. Colonels James A. Ashford and William B. Ross, 2nd Tennessee; Hiram Tilman, 21st Tennessee; or James C. Cole, 5th Confederate
-Majors F. A. Strocky, 2nd Tennessee; and Richard J. Person, 5th Confederate
-All of the listed company commanders

Almost none of these guys have even a Findagrave entry. Captain Beard has an entry with no details on his life or service.

If anyone has any information on these guys, or any other soldier in the ranks, please post and let me know. This is an open thread.
Luke, Col. Pickett is in my book "Confederate Colonels."
Ashford has an entry in Find a Grave.

According to Search for Soldiers, the officers of the 5th Confederate who surrendered in North Carolina were:
- 1st Lt. John Clark (formerly 1st Sgt. of Company G, previously of the 21st TN)
- 2nd Lt. George W. Fraser (formerly Pvt. of Company G as well).

Both appear to have been 5th CS NCOs who were given lieutenancies in the consolidated company (I, 3rd TN Consolidated).
