The New York World of June 1, 1864, reported that since the war began, 580 general officers had been commissioned in the U. S. Army. Of these, 327 were still in service. Attached at the end of this post is the full listing of all 580, giving their places of birth and the states where they had resided at the time of their commission as general.

And, poor Fitz John Porter was the only one "Cashiered." Note also that Dan Sickles was first "Rejected by the Senate," but later reappointed and approved. What was behind that first rejection? -- or any of the four others rejected? (Milton Coggswell, Alexander Chambers, D. Stuart, and John B. S. Todd)

I've tried, unsuccessfully, to find a similar listing from the end of the war. I'm sure there's one somewhere.
