You have to walk a ways to really see it. You can drive by and get a quick glimpse, but it's a terrible area for parking (like most of downtown Boston). My son was 9 years old when he saw the movie Glory, and loved it. They show the monument behind the movie credits, and he had the impression it was a small relief, not much bigger than the television screen. We parked behind the 1790 State House (which is an art gallery in itself), and walked through to the front; came out past the Joe Hooker statue, and crossed to the Gould monument at the top of the Common. My son just stood and stared at it for ten minutes, taking in every detail. Over 20 years later he still talks about it.
