I am an exhibit designer currently engaged in building a diorama of "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh, and need to outfit 5 enlisted and one officer with uniforms, equipment, and weapons. I am looking for 6 long arms, preferably 1853 Enfield Rifled Muskets or the 1842 Springfield Rifled Musket. These will be outfitting a detail of an Iowa Regiment at Shiloh, April 2, 1862. I do not want to resort to non-firing repros as they don't look that great, and I can't afford new off the shelf repros. If you or someone you know is upgrading firearms or leaving the hobby, I am looking for a gun in good condition that I can get for $400 or less. These will become a part of a historic diorama in a regional Midwest Military Museum. If you have something, PM for more details.

Sounds like you are looking for wall hangers that can be cleaned up to look operable. Reenactors and collectors here are not generally known for wall hangers, however, most will certainly know where there is at least one.

Thanks, Ole...yes, that's pretty much what I should expect. The main thing is to come up with a set of rifles that will look right in this exhibit...not TOO beat up or pitted, but maybe not the best shootin' iron. After a lifetime around firearms(my Dad was a modest collector and I grew up with them; still shoot black powder occasionally) I have an idea what to expect and thanks Poor Private for adding the website...I will check that one out.

Cabela's has been making repros of those for a while

Here is their listing. But those are functional and cost about twice as much as you are looking to spend.

Thanks, Col. Steele, for the tip to contact Lodgewood - I spoke with David, who was quite friendly and helpful. As it goes we are seeing a little bit of a drought in used repros and the ones available are getting pricier. Perhaps with some patience and his help I will be able to find five guns I can use, since I have about three months to put this together.

Another angle. Is this a permanent exhibit? If not, perhaps you could borrow muskets.

Yes. It will be a "permanent" exhibit in the main gallery of the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum in Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa. Of course, I could try the Donation approach, as I am sure that any donation of a firearm to this worthy project will certainly be appreciated and somehow tax-deductible.
