William T. Sherman (1820-1891) drove the gold spike opening the Eads Bridge in St. Louis at the July 4, 1874 dedication. Among the other dignitaries in attendance were President Grant and Secretary of War Belknap. Those giving speeches included Mayor Joseph Brown, builder James B. Eads, the governors of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, and former Missouri Senator B. Gratz Brown.
