    Willie Johnston was 11 when he won the award and 13 when it was Granted to him.

    Born in New York, 11-year-old Willie Johnston enlisted in the Union Army alongside his father, serving as a drummer boy with the 3rd Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. In June 1862

    William H. "Willie" Johnston, a drummer boy in 3rd VT Vol. Infantry Company D received the Medal of Honor at age 13 because of his service during the Seven Days Battles, when was cited for bravery by Brigadeer General William "Baldy" Smith. He was 11 at the time of the Battles (June 25 to July 1st, 1862) and received the Medal on 9/16/1863, a little more than a year after the fact at age 13 (Born July of 1850.)

    The youngest person ever to receive the Medal of Honor was probably William "Willie" Johnston, who earned the Medal during the Civil War just prior to his 12th birthday and received his award 6 weeks after his 13th.

    Eleven year old William “Willie” Johnston. Whose service in Company D of the 3rd Vermont Infantry during the Seven Day retreat in the Peninsula Campaign was exemplary.

    Willie Johnston...Earned the Medal of Honor at 11, and was granted the award at 13. I read that the award is not called the "Congressional" Medal of Honor--simply Medal of Honor.
