In 1898, I led a division in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. However, shortly after taking command I fell ill and was replaced by my senior brigade commander who was the son of a Civil War general.

Who am I? Who took over command of my division? Who was their father?

You may be Joseph Wheeler !

Joseph_wheeler_illustration.3.jpg

He was an American military commander and politician. He is known for having served both as a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then as a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish–American War and Philippine–American War near the turn of the twentieth century. Wheeler fell seriously ill during the campaign and turned over command of the division to Samuel S. Sumner (his father Edwin Vose Sumner [January 30, 1797 – March 21, 1863] was a career United States Army officer who became a Union Army general and the oldest field commander of any Army Corps on either side during the American Civil War

[from Wikipedia]

Who Am I: Former Confederate General Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906)
Who Took Over; Samuel S. Sumner (1842–1937)
Who Was "Their" Father: Samuel S. Sumner was the son of Union General Edwin Vose Sumner (1797–1863) - and with the pronoun "their" there - Joseph Wheeler's father wasn't a Civil War general, but Joseph Wheeler was his father's name.

You are former Confederate General Joseph Wheeler, sent to Cuba as commander of the cavalry division. Your heart must have remained Confederate, because in the heat of battle you were said to have called out "Let's go, boys! We've got the **** Yankees on the run again!"

When you fell seriously ill you were replaced by Brigadier General Samuel Storrow Sumner, son of Civil War General Edwin Vose Sumner (both had been also "**** Yankees"...)
