Butler the Beast
(a song parody to the tune: Turkey In The Straw)

1.
He's the surliest general to come from the east,
We quickly named him "Butler the Beast".
He came and conquered thought he was a king
so we had to fight back by doing our thing.

Butler the Beast - from the northeast,
came to our town tried to turn it around,
Must fight back - must make haste.
Any suggestions - "My Goodness human waste"?

2.
He made lots of rules to deny us basic rights,
ruled like a tyrant - his anger was a sight!
The men he subdued, but the women he incites -
make them behave or we won't treat them right.

Butler the Beast - from the northeast.
"Building his career" - the ladies would sneer.
Ladies seeing "red", "Fight back" they said -
so they dumped a chamber pot on Farragut's head!!

3.
This action of his went on for a while
Neither side was happy for it all was a trial.
The time for Butler leaving was coming rather quick -
The lesson learned here: "Don't mess with Southern Chicks".

Butler the Beast - from the northeast.
You earned your nickname - you got your fame.
Head out - you lout - get out today.
Now go on and live with it - hit the highway.

4.
The folks of New Orleans gladly said adieu
in the year of the Lord - Eighteen ___.
there were smiles on the faces of the many women
when he left that morning right at _______.

Butler the Beast - from the northeast.
Our hate is deep, your leaving is sweet,
We'd like to forget - but we'll always remember,
when we said goodbye on the __ th of _____________.

There is some controversy here: My answer is based on the December 16, 1862 New Orleans Daily Picayune report that stated "We learn that General Butler and staff will leave the city at 10 o'clock this morning for the North."
However, according to James Parton,
on the twenty-third, there was "a public leave-taking when a great number of officers and citizens gathered round the general bid him farewell. For two hours, a continuous procession of friends passed by where he stood, and shook him by the hand. General Banks and his officers were among them. Admiral Farragut was there, with many officers of the fleet.
Parton continues, quoting Butler's lengthy farewell address before describing his departure "in an unarmed transport... on December 24th".
