3rd New Jersey Cavalry cap

I was wondering to night about the ancestry of the cap worn by the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry ( 1st U.S. Hussars). Recently I have seen it called a "Russian style lancer cap". I am not sure I would call it such. Does anyone have information if the cap of the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry was based on Russian caps?

A closer examination shows caps with short visors and others without visors. I don't believe they were copied from Russian headgear.

I have looked at what I have about the Russian Army of the Crimean War and did not see any headwear I thought looked like this.

In "Uniforms of the Civil War" by Robin Smith and Ron Field it says the uniform was based on Austrian hussars.

My understanding is that it is a us forage cap with the bill removed. Look at the imperial cossacks. They wore a similar cap - if you squint a little.
