3rd Indiana Cavalry

Interesting. I had posted earlier that my G G Grandfather John W. Senior was with my G Grandfather Hiram Wiley (pictures left) in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry (both sgt's). Actually I've discovered my G G Grandfather Sgt. John W Senior was actually in the 7th Indiana Cavalry Co. D and served with Grierson's Raiders as a Captain (The Horse Soldiers) out of Memphis and LaGrange, Tn. Same exact name doesn't always mean it's a match- has me fooled until I saw his grave close to my other relatives in Madison Indiana.

I had two great grandfathers in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, one, Sgt Hiram Wiley (left) is pictured in the far left of the picture, and the other, Sgt John W. Senior was injured prior to the photo.
I'm not seeing your pictures. Do you know what company they were in?
And my gg grandfather, Pvt. Francis Asbury Heath was in Co. A, and Pvt. William H. Sheets, my gg grand Uncle, was in Co. C and his picture is my avatar. Francis married William's sister after the war ended. William died from wounds he received in '62 also after the war.
And welcome to the forum.

My Great Grandfather was in Co D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry. I've discovered my other GG Grandfather Hiram Wiley (Capt) was in the 7th Indiana Cavalry. The 7th ultimately became the Army US 7th of Custer fame (who served in the 7 Ind during the war). Sgt Hiram Wiley is on the far left of this picture from Petersburg. I'm looking for a picture of the 7th but haven't found any yet.

Your GG Grandfather may have served in the 7th Ind. Vol. Cav., but he wasn't one of Grierson's Raiders who made the famous raid from LA Grange, to Baton Rouge, LA., and the units portrayed in the movie, "The Horse Soldiers." They were Illinois units, not Indiana. I'm actually hoping you made a mistake, and meet to say Illinois, and not Indiana.

The two regiments that made that raid under Grierson were the 6th and 7th Illinois Vol. Cavalry. In addition to my gg grandfather, Francis Asbury Heath who served in Co. A, 3rd Ind. Cav., I also have another gg grandfather, Joseph Edward Adcock, who served in company "L", 7th Ill.Vol. Cavalry, and was on Grierson's raid. For some reason, all my gg grandfather's all served in the cavalry, but in different units. Grandpa Adcock served with the 7th until Nov. of '64 when he was captured during Hoods invasion of Tn. And spent the rest of the war at Andersonville prison. Every Memorial Day, I put flowers on his grave, and when I die, will be buried next to him.

My Francis A. Heath, and his wife, Virginia Sheets were both from Jefferson county, Indiana. The city of Madison is in that county, and my Heath & Sheets ancestors were some of the earliest settlers of that part of Indiana. Many are buried in Madison.

My avatar, William H Sheets, b-i-l to Francis A Heath is buried in the Joyce Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
