34th Confederate Regiment from Alabama

[Central Alabama Roots]

I believe my ancestors would have joined the 34th Regiment of the Confederate AL Infantry in 1862. Both Morris Towles Germany and Solomon Stephens Lambert lived in Tallapoosa County near New Site AL in 1860. This area is now near the Horse Shoe Bend Park. I do know that Morris lost his hearing and Solomon was killed in battle, just not sure what battles. One of the Germany brothers is said to have been with Lee's army at Appomattox . Solomon's brother is said to have died during the Battle of Mobile Bay.

Where do I start researching? Any help would be great.

Welcome from east Tennessee. The website I subscribe to has very little info on Alabama troops. I did find this : I'm guessing Cp of Inst means " Corporal of Instruction ? " like a drill instructor ? or " Camp of Instruction ? " could be your relative lost his hearing while in training ?

Welcome to the forum; as you can see, my Confederate ancestor was a member of the 33d - he was from southern Alabama, between Montgomery and Mobile and enlisted in 1862.

It means "Camp of Instruction", what we would know today as "boot camp". Talladega was a training ground for many units in Alabama. This is an excerpt from Familysearch dot com.

Talladega was one of two camps of instruction established in Alabama for collecting recruits. Faced with a serious manpower shortage a compulsory military service law which went into effect in April 1862. Most men between the ages of 18 and 35 would be obliged to enroll. Talladega and Notasulga were selected as camp sites to collect recruits, which had been volunteers up to this time. Enrolling officers in each county collected men and took them to camp, where they were enrolled and eventually assigned to a front-line unit.[1]
