Impressions 33rd Missouri-Summer 1864

My impression of the 33rd Missouri Infantry during the summer of 1864, tramping across North Mississippi. One thing I've noticed about troops raised either in the border states or southern unionist regiments is that in surviving photos you tend to see more lighter color hats than in other units.

The 33rd Missouri Infantry wore lighter hats during the Civil War primarily due to historical reasons. The blue uniforms would turn lighter blue when marching in the sun, making them more representative of infantry lines, as their dark blue uniforms would become more of a sky blue with experience. Additionally, troops from border states or southern Unionist regiments often had more lighter color hats compared to other units.
