In an article, A Study of the Veteran Grays, New Haven Grays, Connecticut 1861-1862 by Antony F. Gero, and Philip G. Maples with illustration by Alan Archambault. The 3 button gray sack coat worn by this home guard unit is shown. With a gray sack coat, gray cap, and black trousers, the uniform could be mistaken for a Confederate uniform. I was wondering how common 3 button sack coats were during the Civil War. It seems like 4 button sack coat, 5 button sack coats, and 6 button sack coats were much more common than the 3 button version.

The authors used newspaper reports and a black and white illustration by CMH Fellow Woodbridge. One could think this is a Confederate uniform.

I've not heard of a three-button sack coat, and on a militia uniform I find it odd given the era and typical button counts on militia uniforms usually tended towards more rather than less.

Interesting illustration, I like that look for a militia uniform.
