Born in 1837 in France, by age 16 I was an orphan here in the US. When the war began, I enlisted in Louisiana and served as an Aide-de-camp. In June 1862, I became a Captain and Asst Adjutant-General for the Brigadier General. I earned accolades and commendations. In 1864, amid the terrible struggle, I was transferred to the divisional staff of Major General "Little Billy." I helped organize and time a brilliant counterattack which earned me an unprecedented promotion -from Captain directly to temporary Brigadier General. I never lived to see my rank confirmed - a little more than two weeks later, I was killed by a bullet to the head. Who am I?
