The Mattaponi River is a 103-mile-long (166 km)[1] tributary of the York River estuary in eastern Virginia in the United States.

It rises as four streams in Spotsylvania County, each of which is given a shorter piece of the Mattaponi's name:

  • The Mat River and the Ta River join in Spotsylvania County to form the Matta River;
  • The Po River and the Ni River join in Caroline County to form the Poni River;
  • The Matta River and the Poni River join in Caroline County to form the Mattaponi River.
From the confluence of its tributaries, the Mattaponi flows generally southeast through Caroline County, where it collects the South River; in its lower reaches it defines the boundary between King William and King and Queen counties. At West Point, it meets the Pamunkey River to form the York River.

Over the past few years, residents of the counties surrounding Mattaponi River have hotly debated a proposed reservoir, with environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, members of the Mattaponi Indian tribe, and residents of King William County opposing Newport News Waterworks in their efforts to build the King William Reservoir.

The four main tributaries are the Mat, Ta, Po and Ni. These actually form two branches (Mat/Ta and Po/Ni) which are both shown under the name Mattaponi on the maps before they actually converge into the one river.

Various creeks and runs flow into each of the four main tributaries, as they do into the Mattaponi itself. Below are all the named waters I could find that flow into the Mattaponi itself.

There are many more than 6 tributaries to the Mattaponi. Just south of Guinea, VA, Meadow Creek joins it (the Po/Ni branch).

Southwest of Bowling Green, VA there is the South River:

East of the Richmond Turnpike is Polecat Creek:

One that doesn't qualify:
http://www.bayjournal.com/article/water_board_oks_plan_to_dam_mattaponi_tributary_
This source lists Cahoke Creek as a tributary, saying: "The reservoir plan calls for a 6-mile-long reservoir running diagonally across King William County, drawing up to 75 million gallons a day from Cahoke Creek, a tributary to the Mattaponi River, most of it going to Newport News 50 miles away. The reservoir would be completed in 2005"

However, that seems to be Cohoke Creek which is a tributary of the Pamunkey... the same Bay Journal corrected the description (but not the spelling of the name) in May 2009 when the reservoir was once again shot down, as follows: " 1993: Newport News, on behalf of the study group, seeks permits from the Corps and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for a reservoir on Cahoke Creek, a tributary of the Pamunkey River. The reservoir would be filled with water pumped from the Mattaponi River"

I began to wonder if the question refers to these waters as "6 rivers" - "The four main tributaries are the Mat, Ta, Po and Ni. These actually form two branches (Mat/Ta and Po/Ni) which are both shown under the name Mattaponi on the maps before they actually converge into the one river."

Is it claiming that Matta and Poni are the two that make up six? I found those names too. I'm not sure if that's a correction to my first answer or just an amplification of it - since I did identify the two branches as Mat/Ta and Po/Ni. Anyway, I think this must be the answer after all

  • (Wikipedia)

The Mattaponi River's headwaters are in the Piedmont.
4 main tributaries, the Mat, the Ta, the Po, and the Ni Rivers, join together to form the Mattaponi.
The Mat and Ta join in Spotsylvania County to become the Matta River and the Po and Ni join in Caroline County to become the Poni River. The Matta and Poni rivers join to become the Mattaponi River, near the Fall Line
