They fought in every major battle of the Civil War, chased Pancho Villa in Mexico, tried to make the Kaiser dance in World War I, and shot it out with Hitler's finest in World War II. They are Louisiana's oldest military unit and they celebrate their 143rd anniversary this month. The Pentagon calls them the 141st Field Artillery but we know them as New Orleans' own Washington Artillery.

It still exists today.

Curiously it's roots, which are usually pegged to 1838 or so have been proven.to go back to at least 1819.

Even more intriguing is the somewhat clouded evidence of it being as much as 100 years older, which would mean it actually predates Washington.

The Washington Artillery of New Orleans, of which one company served in the Army of Tennessee starting with the Battle of Shiloh, and the rest as Walton's Battalion of several companies in the Army of Northern Virginia. (The individual component units were styled companies rather than batteries even though they were artillery.) Their arsenal used to exist and be open to the public before Hurricane Katrina - though I have never visited - but I don't know if that's still true.
