2nd SC rifles

I can't speak to the arms of the whole regiment, but one or two companies appear to have been armed with short Enfield rifles. Sgt. Richard Kirkland's rifle, a brass mounted Pattern 1856 no.2 "bar-on-band" Enfield Rifle survives, as well as a number of other brass mounted Bar-on-Band rifles within 50 numbers of Kirkland's rifle.

Grayrock Volunteer got it right on the brass Bar-on-Band.

Inventory numbers 2363 and 2367 are known, which are only a few numbers away from the "Kirkland" example, and out of the same crate. One is Id'ed into the 2nd SC. These rifles were most likely a Government purchase early in the war, and supplied by Grazebrook, an arms speculator, to the CS agent in London for export.

They were also issued Pattern 1853 type 3 Enfield rifle muskets

The 2nd South Carolina Infantry and 2nd South Carolina Rifles (aka Moore's Rifles) were two different regiments. If you mean Richard Kirkland, the "Angel of Marye's Heights," he served in the 2nd SC Inf., not the Rifles.

Not sure what the Rifles were initially armed with but they served in Jenkins'/Bratton's Brigade, and according to a February 1865 inspection report the brigade was equipped with 1,394 Enfields a that time.

My great great uncle was Col. Robert E. Bowen of the 2nd SC rifles. I'm also trying to make a replica of the uniform he had. I have a pic of him in uniform when he was a lieutenant.
