I am reading a history of the 24th Wisconsin and found out that Arthur McArthur (Douglas's dad) was only one month past his 17th birthday when he became a Lt. and regimental adjunct. He later took command of the regiment at the ripe old age of 18!! Totaly amazing! I also found out that a John Mitchell, father of "Billy" Mitchell of Army Air Corp fame, was also in the regiment. Too cool.

And you didn't mention that McArthur received the Congressional Medal of Honor for planting the flag on Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863. His son received this honor and they were the first father/son recipients of the Congressional Medal.

And of course General George S Patton had a grandfather killed at the battle of Opequon and a great uncle killed at Gettysburg (played in an Academy Award performance ?? by Ted Turner in "Gettysburg". And George S had two additional great uncles who were confederate colonels and one who was a naval officer.

I'm guessing you're referring to william Beaudot's book on the 24th WIS, an excellent book about an excellent regiment.A side-note:Port Washington(Ozaukee County) is notorious for draft riots of 1862; the City also furnished a substantial number of soldiers for Company H,24th WIS.
Best regards,
badger roy

According to the book, it was Arthur McArthur and his son Douglas later changed it to MacArthur. I wonder why it would matter to him that he would change the spelling?
