Today I had an opportunity to tour the storage room of the Michigan Historical museum to view the Michigan Civil War battle flags. One of the more interesting flags that was brought out for our viewing was the flag the 24th Michigan Infantry carried at Gettysburg. The regiment suffered 80% causalities at Gettysburg including several men killed while carrying the flag. The 24th's Colonel Henry A. Morrow was wounded while holding the flag and captured. Today you can still see the blood stains that were smeared on the flag at Gettysburg. We also ask to see some of the flags carried by the Custer Brigade and a few other flag. The Michiagn Museum has over one hundred Michigan Civil War flags.

Does everyone know the Colonel Morrow of the 24th Michiagn was a Virginian who fought for his adopted state of Michigan?

The colors of the 24th Michigan were carried by a succession of individuals on the first day at Gettysburg:

1. Color Sergeant Abel G. Peck, Company C, killed during initial advance against Archer's Brigade.
2. Color Corporal Charles Bellore, Company E, killed during Pettigrew's Brigade attack (26th North Carolina).
3. Private Augustus Earnest, Company K, killed on the third line.
4. First Sergeant Everard Welton, Company H, held the colors briefly until Col. Morrow passed them to Cpl. Wagner.
5. Color Corporal Andrew Wagner, Company F, wounded in the chest and left the field.
6. Colonel Henry A. Morrow, held the colors briefly.
7. Private William Kelley, Company E, volunteered to take the colors and was soon killed, shot through the heart.
8. Private William A. Spaulding, Company K.
9. Colonel Henry A. Morrow, held the colors again until wounded near the Lutheran Seminary.
10. Unidentified soldier who was mortally wounded.
11. Captain A. M. Edwards, then the senior officer, who carried the colors back to Cemetery Hill.

Darn.... I should have driven down there. I tried to get my buddy interested in making the drive but to no avail.
