The Adjutant General of Iowa's report for 1862 (dated Jan. 1, 1863) reports that the regiment received 960 "Enfield Rifles" cal. .58 in 1862. These were Enfield Rifle-Muskets and were the regiment's original issue.
The guns were part of a shipment of 5,000 .58 Cal. Enfield Rifle Muskets turned over by Capt. Crispin of the New York Agency to Col. D.D. Tompkins, A.Q.M.G. at New York, on July 18th and 19th, 1862 for transportation to Gov. Kirkwood "for Iowa Vols" at various locations in Iowa. A thousand of these were turned over on July 19 to W.H. Darling, the agent of the Erie Railway Co., for shipment to Iowa City, where the 22nd was forming at Camp Pope. Accoutrements and 20,000 cal. .57 elongated ball cartridges followed a couple of days later from the New York Arsenal. The arms were issued in late August or early September to the regiment.
The compilation by the Ordnance Bureau of the regiment's quarterly returns of ordnance and ordnance stores for the quarter ending December 31, 1862 shows 772 Enfield Rifled Muskets Cal. .577/.58 with 9 of the 10 companies reporting.
The regiment's March 1863 Record of Events (still several months before Vicksburg surrendered) states: "Our regiment is armed with Enfield rifles, calibre fifty-eight. Well disciplined and efficient. Ready for action...." Supplement to the O.R.'s, v. 20, p. 454.
