Adolph & Jerome Goffinet of an Indiana regiment deserted several days before the battle at..... Brice's Crossroads. Their unit was very active in the fighting. I personally believe they were lucky to get home alive and we'll.

I don't know a lot about them other than what I told you. Not even a regiment, although they could easily be ancestors. I don't know. Same last name ( not too common) same area of settlement as other ancestors, Perry Indiana.
I don't know lots about them.

Well they left quite awhile before Brice's Cross Roads, but hopefully you can use some of these findings to learn more about these fellows.

The Adjutant Generals Report for the State of Indiana, volume 8, List of Deserters, has the name spelled Goffnet. I mention this as a reminder to be mindful of those pesky alternate spellings!

Sure thing. I even downloaded that one 'cause I was interested in searching names of prisoners and casualties of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry.

Go to Google Books and enter search words: Adjutant General Report (and the State).
Or sometimes you can enter the regiment Number but spelled out.
Some states have several reports. You might get one containing history and rosters for 1880 regiments.

This is a different kind of report about Iowa units.
Further into this document(about page 1000), it has reports on battles and a report of casualties. But the casualty reports are not tabulated but just typed out in paragraph form. I haven't checked it all to see if it is just Iowa or if it might include other states.

Page 1061 has a report of one unit on Forrest's raid into Memphis.
Page 1488 is a Index for each Regiment. This refers to page 934 for Casualties of 2 Iowa Cavalry but this section(and this book) may only cover the last year of the war.

I may have to check this out more closely.

@yankee hoorah , when you were pursuing the Goffinets some time back, you were going to try to get some genealogical info going from you backwards -- the idea being that two building trees might link up. Do I remember that right? Any luck?
