Headed up to Corinth for our CWT Shiloh muster meeting, or course I'm take my detector. When I told my pilot aka @redbob he said fine as long as it wasn't in the park, So I had to switch gears which got me to thinking we will be going right by the CS camp where I found 2 CS, 2 piece belt plates by 10am one day back in 1979.

Back then there was no interweb thing. You had to go to the library and then put "Boots on the ground" Fortunately I had access to one that had a LOT of CS regimental histories. I found a reference to a Missouri CS cav camp after the loss at Corinth. The CS Army retreated south as well as west after the battle. This unit went south down the M&O railroad and setup a major camp.

Got all the research and the USGS Topo maps and we headed over. First weekend we just checked things out, old roads. water etc and talked to a few landowners. Didn't find anything. Next weekend we went back and when going down an old road that ran next to the RR saw a old guy out on his tractor and we got to talking. I showed him a CW bullet I always carry when I'm relic hunting, and he went on to tell me that "when they built that water tower they a bunch of those" I asked if we could go up there. Long story short we did and got to finding so much stuff we spent the night. Nest morning by 10am I had 2 CS plates. I believe we will at least stop by for a quick look. This is from the North South Trader, Nov 1979

Being ruffed and cuffed by Park Police (first, last and only metal detecting effort) once was plenty in my life. And as I tried to tell them I wasn't anywhere near NPS Property, I didn't even get an apology.

About ten years ago, after I got my younger brother hooked, on detecting, he went up to Gettysburg without his detector, but with digging tools in the back of his bright yellow Corvette. The day was miserable and drizzling yet there he was out in a newly plowed field in the vicinity of Confederate Ave moving his leg back and forth moving dirt with his foot. He had done this in the past and found a porcelain button and .69 Gardner. Well someone from a distance thought he was detecting, due to his swinging his leg back and forth and they called it in. Here is where it gets hilarious, at the time my brother was a professional bodybuilder, I know, is there really such a thing?

The Park Police show up and see his size, so they call the City Police, who call the State Police, not sure of all the jurisdictions, but the way my brother tells it, there were now 8 different cars with as many or more officers. They surround him and tell him that they don't want any trouble they just want to know where he hid the detector. He told them that he didn't have one, but no one believed it since they were able to see digging tools in the rear hatch of the Corvette. He was adamant, but they took him to every tree and bush in the vicinity looking for the detector that they knew had to be near. After four hours they finally listened to what he had to say and let him go, he told them that yes he does hunt, but knows enough not to bring anything on Park land and that he had been hunting near Monocacy the day before, on at the time, private property, thus the tools.

I guess the officers didn't want to use their weapons in public, but we could never figure out why they had to bring so much backup!
