On April 6, 1865 something strange happened at High Bridge, Virginia. It involved two brigadier generals, one Union and one Confederate. What was that strange event?

I don’t know if this is the "strange event" that answer the question - but it fits all the clues in this unusual chain of events: Union Colonel (Brevet Brigadier General) Theodore Read (1835-1865) and Confederate Brigadier General James Dearing (1840-1865) both died - shooting each other - Read died instantly - Dearing died April 25, 1865.

“As the two forces clashed, Generals Read and Dearing caught each other’s eye, and the fight became personal. As their respective forces watched, they engaged in a dramatic close-range pistol duel on horseback. With only one arm, Read was at a fatal disadvantage; he was killed almost instantly, but not before shooting his adversary. Dearing fell from his horse, mortally wounded.”

Both Brigadier Generals, Union Brigadier James Reed and Confederate General James Dearing were hit at the same time on the bridge. Reed was shot and killed by Dearing, Dearing himself was mortally wounded at the same time.
Other than that I did not find any strange event comprising two Brigadiers at the High Bridge

Both Union and Confederate armies attempted to destroy High Bridge. Union Brigadier General Theodore Read and Confederate Brigadier James Dearing were involved in a gunfight that took both of their lives.

Edit - Correct, Hudson Valley Yank. Welcome to the trivia game.

Hope you'll come back and play again.

At the Battle of High Bridge on April 6, 1865, Brig General James Dearing and his cavalry clashed with a union force of infantry and cavalry. He fought a close range pistol duel with the union commanders, Colonel (Brevet Brig General) Theodore Read and Francis Washburn. Read was killed on the spot, supposedly by Dearing. While Washburn was mortally wounded by a bullet through the mouth Dearing was mortally wounded himself when he was shot through the lungs, and he was taken prisoner. Dearing died on April 22 (like Colonel Washburn), and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.

I don't view it as strange. They charged each other and got killed. It was war. But I hope this is what you are looking for.

This may refer to the deaths of rebel Brigadier General James Dearing (1840-1865) and Brevet Brigadier General Theodore Read (1835-1865), who shot and killed each other at close range. Read died immediately; Dearing lingered until April 22. (Technically, Dearing was a Colonel, as his promotion to Brigadier General had not yet been approved by the rebel Congress. He was the last rebel General killed in the conflict.)

There were a lot of strange things as in any battle. The Battle of High Bridge. Going with a close quarters pistol battle between two officers, CSA James Dearing and Union Francis Washburn who both were Brevet Brig.Gens.. Apparently they mortally wounded each other in the battle and both of them died on the same day April 22,1865
