I was born in Kentucky, the son of a slaveholder. I pursued a college education, becoming a Minister. Much to the chagrin of my father, I became an Abolitionist. I was one of the founders of the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. During the rebellion, I was forced out of my home state by pro-slavery mobs. I later returned to educate and minister to newly freed slaves who were joining the U. S. Army and their families.
