The Meagher Guard, part of the First Regiment South Carolina Rifles, changed their name to the Emerald Light Infantry. In February 1862 the regiment merged with the 17th South Carolina Militia becoming the First South Carolina Infantry (aka Maxcy Gregg's Regiment).
The Emerald Light Infantry and the Jasper Greens Company of the 17th SCM became Company 6, eventually Company K of the combined Regiment.

They changed their name to Emerald Light Infantry on May 9, 1861 and on July22, 1861 became part of 1st South Carolina Volunteers Company K. They served with that regiment in Gregg's/McGowan Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Days to Appomattox.
