The Battle of Ball's Bluff
Senator Edward Dickinson Baker, a U.S. Senator of Oregon was struck simultaneously in his heart and brain by four bullets and died instantly.
Future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. was shot in the chest, a nearly fatal wound. Holmes obviously recovered, only to be wounded again at Antietam and again at Chancellorsville.

Colonel Eppa Hunton - future Senator from Virginia (1892-1894), commanded the 8th Virginia Infantry

Oh, wow. I'm sure it's a reference to Early's Washington raid, that (IIRC) featured a young, future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes telling President Lincoln in no uncertain terms to keep his head down. But I don't recall a Senate connection.

Battle of Ball's Bluff, Oct. 21, 1861. Senator Edward D. Baker from my own state of Oregon, a close friend of President Lincoln, was killed. The future Supreme Court Justice was Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who was wounded in this fiasco. Source, the inevitable wikipedia, starting with the article on Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. As soon as I found out he'd been at Ball's Bluff, I knew the answer, but looked up the wikipedia article on the battle to be sure.
