I came out of Charleston in Eighteen sixty-three,
fifty feet of fighting power to attack my enemy.
I looked like a ship; and some say a submarine,
and to see me in the water, I looked like something in-between.

In October of ’63 I was ready to be tried,
as I left Charleston harbor with help from an ebb tide.
My target was a Yankee ship a most impressive size,
if I could sneak up and fire - t’would be the grandest prize.

I was ballasted and designed to be mostly submerged,
and with my “top side” painted blue, to Yankee ships I’d surge.
So as I floated to that Ironclad, I could hear them shout,
“What boat is that!!” was their cry as I fire to take them out.

I was unaware that after my torpedo was released,
the water would come back on me, and I would be besieged.
It seems that soon all was lost, my crew abandoned me,
for on that night, they had no plans, to meet their enemies.

Thank goodness that my pilot, did not know how to swim.
for he allowed me to float on, so the Yankees would not win.
Although we both were damaged, and we'd both would “limp” away,
we would continue in our service to fight another day,

I had a reputation for a boat that was so small,
for when I faced the Union boats, I would feel so tall.
I faced the Yanks with my torpedo, and tried to make them pay.
my small boat, against their giants that I would try to slay.

1. What was the name of the Confederate torpedo boat?
2. What was the name of the Union ironclad?

Abraham Lincoln said, of his son Willie at his death, "My poor boy. He was too good for this earth. God has called him home. I know that he is much better off in heaven, but then we loved him so."

Bonus:

On Oct. 5, 1863, the Confederate torpedo boat "David", one of the war's innovations, attacks but fails to sink the Union's "USS New Ironsides" at Charleston.

Upon first seeing his dead son, Willie, President Lincoln murmured, “My poor boy. He was too good for this earth. God has called him home. I know that he is much better off in heaven, but then we loved him so. It is hard, hard to have him die!”
